Adam Kowal on the riverfront under a yellow steel bridge, sword in hand, white-blue lightning crawling along the blade. Behind him a seam stands fenced off with road barricades while onlookers film it on their phones.
Pittsburgh, fourteen years after the gods arrived.

The best capped battlemage in western Pennsylvania

Adam Kowal has been stuck at level 299 for two years. He’s good enough to solo a Tier III seam before lunch, and not good enough to matter. Every battlemage on every world stops there, and the textbooks call his class a trap.

Then one bad bet later, the System shows him a line no battlemage has ever seen.

Now his name is climbing the Ladder in front of the whole world. The guilds want to own him. The government wants his method. The mage establishment needs him to be a fraud. And every capped battlemage alive wants what he has.

He isn’t telling, and he isn’t stopping.

Adam stands still on a busy Strip District sidewalk at noon, sword across his back, looking at something in the air in front of him that nobody else can see. Produce stalls, a jersey stand and shoppers pass around him.
“Adam stood on the curb with his sword across his back and did not open his status. There was no need: it had said the same thing for two years. He opened it anyway.” From Chapter 1

The Ladder

Fourteen years ago the gods arrived and Earth got the System. Seams opened across the planet, tears into the wreckage of dead worlds, graded from Tier I to Tier IX. Runners go in after the cores that now keep the lights on.

And everyone checks the Ladder, the System’s public ranking of the world’s thousand strongest, the way people used to check stock prices. Nobody below Tier IV has made it in years, and no battlemage ever has.

“The Duelist was on the list. Adam was not, and as long as he was stuck at 299 he never would be.”
